Another roadside trailhead caught my attention for our dive into the southland. The Terranea Discovery Trail ran along the road for a bit, and then headed out toward the sea and around a resort. No need to spend the money to stay at the resort; the trails along the sea were public.
Just steps away from our trusty steed on the side of the road, it was already starting to look a bit like our heart’s northern home.

Due to a concert taking up much of the resort’s residents’ attention, we had plenty of room on the trails to ourselves.
The deep blue ocean was stunning against the rock outcroppings that we could climb upon.
And there were benches along the way should we need to stop.
It was the perfect place for Tucker. who loves the scents he catches off the ocean breeze but hates getting his feet wet.
And for me, it was about experiencing the character of the cliffs, the ancientness of the rocks, and the vastness of the ocean.
We stayed long enough to watch the sun dip low on the horizon in the magic hour as we walked back.
While it wasn't the deep forest of the Bay area or the dramatic character of the mid-peninsula coastline, I had only to look at Tucker's smile to realize that the southland could provide all our souls needed until we could step back into the redwood forest again. And instead of longing for that which we would experience in the future, I would do as Tucker was: enjoying the beauty Nature provided right here, right now.
